Everyone has his own friendship and some have a lot of friends. But in fact, quantity is not so important as quality. Loyalty is the most important for friendship. No one wants to make friends with those who will betray them.

No matter whether you are married or not, no matter where you live and work, your friends are your friends. It is not based on bloodline. It relies on your intention. His mother, Chris, says she called the police when Joey disappeared one afternoon after telling his older brother, Lachlan, 14, that he was off to play hide-and-seek.

C

It’s the basic nature of young children to touch the things in their environment that their parents find most unpleasant. Just try to keep your one-year olds from sticking the dog’s bone in their mouth!

Although health authorities suggest regular hand washing, it’s difficult not to worry about what your children are getting into and the effect it will have on their health. Infectious(传染的) diseases are a great cause for concern, but some would argue that our society has gone overboard when it comes to protecting our kids from bacteria(细菌).

An increasing body of research suggests that exposing little kids to bacteria may offer them greater protection from illnesses such as allergies(过敏) later on in life. It’s believed that when exposure to bacteria and viruses is limited early in life, children face a greater chance of having allergies and other autoimmune (自身免疫的)diseases during adulthood. In fact, kids with older brothers and sisters who grew up on a farm seem to show lower rates of allergies.

Just as a baby’s brain needs stimulation, input, and interaction to develop normally, the young immune(免疫的) system is strengthened by exposure to everyday bacteria so that it can learn, adapt, and regulate itself, notes Thom McDade, PhD, associate professor and director of the Laboratory for Human Biology Research at Northwestern University.

Exactly which bacteria seem to do the trick hasn’t yet been confirmed. But new research offers clues. In a recent study, McDade’s team found that children who were exposed to more dirt and had more cases of diarrhea (腹泻) before age 2 had lower rates of inflammation (炎症) that has been linked to many adulthood diseases such as heart disease in adulthood.

We’re moving beyond this idea that the immune system is just involved in allergies and autoimmune diseases to think about its role in inflammation and other diseases, “McDade ”says. “Exposure to bacterium early in life may play an important role in preventing inflammation in adulthood.”

66. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Exposure to bacteria as a child can help protect him or her from some illnesses later in life.

B. Kids with older brothers and sisters have lower rates of allergies.

C. Exposure to bacterium will increase the chance of having allergies in adulthood.

D. Parents should protect their kids from exposure to bacteria.

67. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refers to __________ .

A. a baby’s brain B. the young immune system

C. exposure to everyday bacterium D. a baby’s body

68. If a kid is exposed to dirt before age 2, he may_________.

A. have fewer cases of diarrhea in adulthood

B. develop a worse immune system than others

C. be more likely to have allergies later in life

D. be less likely to develop heart disease in adulthood

69. What is the author’s attitude towards kids’ exposure to bacteria?

A. Dissatisfied. B. Negative. C. Supportive. D. Angry.

70. The passage is probably written for__________.

A. parents B. your children C. teachers D. nurses

解析:

66.答案是:A。

70.答案是:A。从文章第一段可知。

A节(10分)

方向:阅读以下段落。使用来自该段落的信息填写编号的空白。每个答案写的不超过三个字。

With more than 12,500 plastic bottles being discarded (丢弃) every eight seconds, environmentalists are trying to come up with new innovative uses for this artificial (man-made) waste that is rapidly filling our landfills (垃圾填埋地) and harming our marine life.

Now, some developing nations are finding a new use for discarded bottles --- building much-needed schools. A Central American organization called Pura Vida was the first to come up with this innovative idea. Instead of using building bricks, they filled plastic bottles with rubbish and built walls by piling them up between steel wires. The resulting structure was not only eco-friendly and cheap, but also as strong as a structure built using normal materials.

The project, which cost only US$ 5,181, was so successful that it had led to the establishment of a non-profit organization, Bottle Schools, which, with the support of San Diego-based Hug It Forward, has built five additional schools in Guatemala and has two more in the works.

Taking the hint from Bottle Schools is the My Shelter Foundation, which, under the leadership of Lilac Diaz, has started similar projects in Asia. Built on land donated by the government, the San Pablo, a Philippine school, was also built by volunteers and with “donations” of plastic bottles by the locals. However, unlike the other bottle schools, these bottles are filled with liquefied adobe(液化土坯),which is three times stronger than concrete, and they are reinforced with steel bars. The school is also a lot more stylish than the previous ones, thanks to the different colors of the bottles and the open-air design. The best part is that this is just one of many such schools that will be built throughout the country. This kind of structure would be a great idea for developing countries around the world. And because it is good for the environment, perhaps it would also be a good way to celebrate Earth Day.

What is Christmas all about? Has it ever crossed your mind? Are we teaching our children the true meaning of Christmas? Do they know that a single gift of kindness can touch an endless number of hearts forever?

We met a little girl seven years ago during one of my daughter’s occasional hospital stays. Her name was Beth and she was my daughter’s roommate for a week. My daughter had an incurable kidney disease. Beth was a very happy girl, despite the fact that she had cancer. I was amazed at her will and determination to never give up, however sick her treatment made her. She was always concerned about my daughter and the other children with cancer.

My daughter’s hospital treatment was completed in a week and we were waiting for her final discharge orders when Beth appeared. She said “I want you to have this. I know you need a new kidney, so keep this angel pin with you till you get better. She will watch over you and make you smile. My friend, John, gave it to me to watch over me. When you get your new kidney and smile, you can give this angel to someone that needs her, too”. My daughter thanked her and the girls exchanged hugs and big smiles. Later that year, Beth passed away.

We kept that angel for six more years. My daughter had gone beyond what medical journals had studied and expected from her disease. Finally, a kidney became available and she received a transplant.

Now she felt it was time to give it to someone who needed to be watched over until he or she could smile again. She gave it to an elderly man trying to recover from a heart problem.

How many families and hearts this angel has touched, no one knows for sure. But all that it took was a single gift of kindness. So in this Christmas season, create a tradition with your children or maybe someone you love. Give them a gift that keeps on giving. It’s a gift from your heart. After all, isn’t that Christmas is all about?

How to build an economized society

_________________________________________________________________________ _____________

One possible version

Our government is aiming to build an economized society. It is everybody’s duty to work hard to achieve the goal including us students.

Recently the statistics in the report of our school in two school terms suggested that the expense of electricity, water and paper are surprisingly large and growing rapidly, which draws our attention.

As a common member of society, we must keep the following points in our minds. Firstly, make sure that the lights and all the other electric facilities are turned off when we finish our work and leave the room. Secondly, try to form the habit of turning off the tap after it is used and the waste water can be reused for more purposes before being poured into the sewers. Thirdly, save paper as much as possible in our daily life. Try to use both sides of paper. Fourthly, we can ride bikes to school every day and there is no need for parents to drive us to school. Fifthly, don’t use things like paper cups and disposable (not reusable) chopsticks because they are made of wood.

In a word, if we pay much attention to our everyday behaviour and take actions to reduce waste, we can make contributions to an economized society.
